Built in 1839 and left untouched for 24 years, the western pier lighthouse had fallen into a state of disrepair.

Work started last year after funding was secured to repair the ironwork, timber, glazing and masonry on the two structures.

John Baker, chief executive of Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, said: "The harbour is the jewel in Whitehaven's crown and there's a lot of investment coming into the town and we want people to see we are trying to make the community proud."
The lighthouse on the pier's north side is expected to be finished in the next four-to-five weeks.
