It comes after the Boundary Commission drew up plans for new constituencies reducing the number of MPs from 533 to 501 in England.

Proposed changes would mean every constituency would have roughly the same number of constituents - no fewer than 71,031 and no more than 78,507.

The current electorate for Burnley is 64,000.

Under the plan it would lose three wards to the proposed Accrington constituency but would extend north to include eight wards from the existing Pendle constituency.

An extraordinary meeting of Burnley Council will be held at the town hall on 23 November, to decide on how to respond to the current consultation, which is running until 5 December.

Final proposals are due in October 2018 and if agreed by Parliament the new boundaries would be in place by the 2020 general election.

  16. LCC faces multimillion-pound shortfall in adult social carepublished at 11:10 GMT 16 November 2016

Lancashire faces a multimillion-pound shortfall in adult social care funding, it has emerged.

A report to the county council's scrutiny committee shows it faces an overall funding gap of £148m by 2020/2021 with £92m of that being adult social care.

The report details how the county is tackling some of the issues.

The 16-page document stresses Lancashire is not alone, that there is a “precarious” national situation wherever there is heavy reliance on council funded care and that changes will have to be made to the way the current system operates.

    Its strategy will include:

    • Involving local communities in efforts to maintain health and well-being into older age
    • Allowing the council to intervene and support struggling service providers where necessary
    • More support from occupational therapists to enable care providers to help people regain skills and live independently
