Richard Davie, of auctioneers Nottingham's International Autograph Auctions, said the note, signed on 4 May 1945, was an "historically important document".

German forces in Italy had already surrendered on 2 May, but those in northwest Germany, Denmark and Holland surrendered to Field Marshal Montgomery, who was commanding all the British and Canadian armies in Europe, inside a tent at his headquarters, at Luneburg Heath on 4 May 1945.

The final document of unconditional surrender was signed at US General Dwight Eisenhower's headquarters in Reims on 7 May.

  12. Fracking firm would 'work around' ancient treespublished at 15:54 GMT 3 January 2017

    Dave Wade
    BBC Local Live

Sherwood Forest contains a number of ancient trees, most notably the 800-year-old Major Oak, where legend has it Robin Hood and his Merry Men sheltered.

Mr Pickering from Ineos Shale said his firm would have to consult with Nottinghamshire County Council if fracking was a viable option there to "work around ancient/veteran trees".

"We anticipate that some areas will be straightforward while others may require adjustment to take account of specific environmental features," he said.

  13. What are seismic surveys?published at 15:47 GMT 3 January 2017

    Dave Wade
    BBC Local Live

Seismic imaging involves transmitting soundwaves into the ground and the reflections reveal the patterns of the rocks. This describes where the shale lies.

Fracking firms don't require planning permission to carry out surveys.

Mr Pickering, from Ineos Shale, said: "The data acquired helps us understand the subsurface layers and fracture systems and determine potential drilling locations from a geological perspective.

"Further analysis of surface constraints is required before a drilling site can be considered suitable."

Ineos Shale, the firm behind the surveys, has said it isn't fracking there currently and accused Friends of the Earth of "alarming the public".

"In order to build upon our existing knowledge of the ground below us, we are currently preparing to carry out seismic imaging surveys across our wider licence area in the East Midlands which includes part of Sherwood Forest," said operations director, Tom Pickering.

"This process does not include fracking in any form."

  15. No fracking applications received - county councilpublished at 14:54 GMT 3 January 2017

    Dave Wade
    BBC Local Live

Back to potential fracking in Sherwood Forest now.

Nottinghamshire County Council have said that reports are "without foundation", saying it hasn't received any planning applications for shale gas development that involve fracking anywhere in the county.

While that's true, the council did give permission for exploratory drilling in Misson, in the north of the county, to a firm called Island Gas limited in November.
