  5. Worcestershire looks to follow Shropshire's lead on hip operationspublished at 17:56 GMT 27 January 2017

Health commissioners in Worcestershire are thinking of cutting the number of hip and knee operation, by only treating the most severe cases.

It's a move criticised in several of today's national papers.

It's also following in the footsteps of Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group, which introduced similar measures in November 2015.

The Royal College of Surgeons said Worcestershire's proposals have "no clinical justification", but Dr Julian Povey, the Clinical Chair of the Shropshire CCG said that while money pressures in Shropshire are an issue, it was done here "to make sure the right people get the right operation at the right time”.

Dr Povey also said: "There is no-one in Shropshire who would be denied an operation if they had a level of symptoms where they had severe pain or severe limitation of activity."
