They will help in deciding where to place anyone aged 17 or under who has been remanded in custody or sentenced.

Currently, young offenders can be detained in Greenfields Secure Children's Home or the Young Offenders Institute at HMP La Moye.

Alternatively, they can be transferred to a facility in the UK.

    Quote Message

This new panel will have a central role in deciding where young offenders are placed. The role of the panel is crucial, as it will not only have to consider the best interests of the offender but also those of other children detained or accommodated in the same facility.”

    BBC Radio Guernsey

A new way of making sure prisoners stay out of Les Nicolles appears to be working.

The States Restorative Justice Officer Paul Chambers says getting offenders and victims to meet face to face has had a positive affect and goes a long way to stop re-offending.

  9. Should prisoners have a right to vote?published at 16:58 GMT 24 November 2016

    Facebook

About 50 Jersey prisoners could get the right to vote, under plans from "Privileges and Procedures" - the group which oversees the election process.

But should prisoners get the right to vote, or is it a privilege they forfeit when they go to prison?

Here's what you've been saying on Facebook...

Alex: It's quite shocking that they now do not have a right to vote! It is one of basic human rights as per European Convention of Human Rights. Jersey being far behind the rest of the Europe with its legislation really need sort this out.

Phil: No, they gave up their right to vote when they committed the crime!

Mojay: If they dont know right from wrong how would they know who to vote for?

Mike: Prisoners in Guernsey can vote.

    You're right Mike, they can.

In fact, prisoners in Guernsey have had the right to vote since 2004, but in this year's General Election, only two of the 94 inmates chose to do so.
