A woman has died after falling 100ft (30m) from a narrow path near a viaduct in the Eden Valley.

The 60-year-old was walking with friends in Smardale Gill, near Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, on Friday when the accident happened.

A Royal Navy Sea helicopter managed to land on the viaduct and the woman was lifted to the bridge.

But Dave Stewart, of the Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team, said rescuers were unable to save her.

Two Great North Air Ambulances (GNAA) were also involved in the rescue attempt as well as 16 volunteer mountain rescuers.

Mr Stewart said: "Despite the best efforts of the GNAA paramedics and doctor the woman did not survive the fall."
