Steven Smith was stabbed twice at his home in Rushden

A father of three who was stabbed in his home would have taken "minutes to die", a court has heard.

Steven Smith, 23, died in the early hours of 25 October last year at his home in Trafford Road in Rushden after a row with his friend Danny Beaumont.

A pathologist told jurors Mr Smith suffered a stab wound but would have been able to talk and walk right up until the moment he collapsed and died.

Mr Beaumont, who denies murder, claims Mr Smith "pushed" himself on the blade.

'Overwhelmed'

Prosecutors have told the jury at Northampton Crown Court that the two men fell out while drinking and that Mr Beaumont, of Maple Road, Rushden, stabbed Mr Smith twice - in the chest and in the back.

Pathologist Prof Guy Rutty told the court Mr Smith would have been conscious for minutes while his body shut down.

He said: "In this time, he can talk, move, walk, run, up to the point where he is beginning to become overwhelmed with blood loss."

Mr Smith's girlfriend, Ainsley Douglas, has told the court that she came down the stairs to see her boyfriend had been stabbed and that he was pale and asked her to call for an ambulance.

She said as her phone was dead she asked the defendant to call but said he refused, and stabbed her boyfriend in the back.

She told the court that Mr Smith collapsed as she tried to walk him out of the house to get help.

The trial continues.
