Darren Rooney and Jamie Shaw guilty of £30,000 Largs raid

Two men have been convicted of robbing a businessman at gunpoint in his North Ayrshire home while his terrified teenage daughter hid upstairs.

Darren Rooney, 29, and Jamie Shaw, 39, barged into 49-year-old Gordon Craig's home in Largs on 24 August last year.

They threatened the restaurant chain owner before tying him up and escaping with £30,000 in cash and a Rolex watch.

Detectives traced the pair after CCTV images showed them on a "recce" days before the raid. Sentence was deferred.

Judge Bill Dunlop told them after the verdict: "You have been convicted, on the clearest of evidence, of what was a terrifying experience for Mr Craig and his daughter."

Ski masks

The High Court in Glasgow heard that the robbery took place about 22:00 while Mr Craig was at home with his 18-year-old daughter Candy.

Ms Craig, 18, said she was in her bedroom when she was awoken by her dog barking.

She said: "I heard my dad scream and yelling 'get out the house'. Initially I thought I must be dreaming."

The court heard that Shaw and Rooney wore ski masks and had a firearm when they stormed into the house.

Ms Craig remembered one shouting he was going to "blow the dog's head off" if it did not stop barking.

As the teenager cowered in her room, she heard her father being asked how much money was in the house.

'Heart pounding'

The witness wept as she told the jury: "My heart was pounding... I did not know what to do."

She said she was even too frightened to call the police in case the raiders heard her.

After the pair fled, Mr Craig shouted for his daughter.

Ms Craig told prosecutor Richard Goddard that when she saw him "there was tape above his eye - his face was white. There was panic, shock.

"His hands were together with wire, more like cable."

She helped free her father before the police were eventually alerted.

The court heard that a recording from one of Mr Craig's neighbours' CCTV cameras showed Rooney and Shaw sizing up the house days before the robbery.

Gun box

In early October 2014 police raided Shaw's home in Glasgow's Shawlands area and found large bundles of cash - totalling almost £6,000 - hidden throughout the flat.

This included £3,000 stuffed inside a cereal packet. They also found a box for a gun in a cupboard.

A black Audi car - said to be of "significance" to police - was outside the flat.

Inside the vehicle was a card from one of Mr Craig's Tinto Tapas restaurants in Uddingston, South Lanarkshire.

It emerged Shaw often ate at the Tinto Tapas restaurant in Glasgow's Battlefield area - and that Mr Craig would sometimes give him a drink "on the house".

Mr Craig had also told police that one of the robbers had a "distinctive" walk - similar to that of Shaw.

Both men already had high court convictions prior to the raid.

Shaw was jailed for four years in 2005 for a drugs offence, while Rooney was locked up for five years in 2010 after being caught with a gun.
