Newport County extended their unbeaten League Two run to seven matches as they came from two goals down to claim a hard-earned point at Rotherham United.

Paul Mullin's penalty and Aaron Nemane's strike put the hosts in firm control early on at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

But Harrison Biggins' spot-kick along with Ged Garner's effort ensured the Exiles claimed a point from what was their first meeting with the Millers since 1987.

The draw did ensure Alex Bruce's side ended their three-game losing streak in addition to climbing out of the relegation zone, although they are now winless in five league outings.

Hayden Mullins' men are on their best unbeaten league run since midway through the 2023-24 season after claiming a third successive away draw.

The hosts made a dream start as, after Nemane's cross struck the arm of Joe Thomas, Mullin rifled beyond Jordan Wright from the penalty spot to notch his sixth goal of the campaign after just four minutes.

Shortly after Jamie Jellis spurned a glorious chance from close range, the hosts went 2-0 up as Jayce Fitzgerald's perfectly weighted through ball found Nemane who drilled past Wright into the net via the far post - the Frenchman's first home goal for the Millers.

Having been second best, Mullins' side were handed a lifeline before the half hour mark as Michael Adu-Poku went down just inside the box under contact from Hamish Douglas.

Despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Julian Eyestone, Biggins drilled his spot-kick into the bottom corner to get his side back into the contest.

It triggered an improvement from Newport, although Wright denied Mullin and Dominic Iorfa in quick succession as Rotherham pushed for a third goal in the second half.

They were emphatically punished for not taking those chances as Eyestone fumbled Adu-Poku's shot before blocking Biggins' follow-up effort, although Garner was on hand to guide the loose ball into the net.

Rotherham looked rattled and were grateful to see Adu-Poku fail to guide an effort on target as Newport looked the likelier to net a late winner - with captain Kyle Cameron firing over from close range in the 90th minute.

But the points were ultimately shared as Newport's impressive start to the Mullins era continued while the pressure on Millers boss Bruce increased further.

Bruce: 'Bitterly disappointed'

Rotherham United boss Alex Bruce told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I'm bitterly disappointed. To chuck the game away like we did, the mistakes that we've made. What can you say? Just basic errors.

"The penalty was a lapse of concentration and the second one is a calamity of three or four mistakes.

"It's a shame because the way we started the game, and the first half, it was a bit more like it, wasn't it?

"I was pleased with the first half performance but then we let them back into it. We got a bit nervy and a bit edgy. That was the story of the night."

Newport County head coach Hayden Mullins:

"We're happy with the point. It keeps our belief going and our unbeaten run going.

"We're really disappointed with the first half, that start is out of character for us and we addressed it at half time.

"One thing I spoke about at the end of the game was our character, our togetherness and how we keep fighting.

"At the end we were getting stronger. It looked like we had a bit more energy towards the end and we were almost pushing to get the winner which was good. It's pleasing to see."
