Terry Devlin's volley was his second goal of the season

Terry Devlin struck a late equaliser as Portsmouth came from behind to earn a point from a very poor game against Wolves at Molineux.

It looked like Wolves had won it with the first on-target shot when summer signing Jordan James came off the bench to score for the second time this season.

Victory would have lifted Cesar Peixoto's side to fifth in the early Championship table, above neighbours West Bromwich Albion.

But Pompey had the last word when they levelled with the game's second effort on target to extend the visitors' improved run to just one defeat in seven.

Tommy Doyle conceded a foul on Adrian Segecic on the edge of the box, the Croatian's free-kick was blocked but it fell to Devlin, who volleyed home the rebound for his second goal of the season.

That triggered a late on-field flare-up in which Pompey boss John Mousinho clashed with Peixoto after he was told by the Wolves head coach that he "talks too much".

Both Jordan James' first two goals for Wolves have come at Molineux

On a rain-lashed, weirdly subdued night at Molineux, in a game twice rearranged because of fixture confusion higher up football's foodchain, it looked for most of the 90 minutes that it would have been best off postponing it permanently.

In a first half of desperately poor quality, neither side managed a single shot on target between them, Pompey's Estonian midfielder Rocco Shein coming closest with a left-foot effort which arrowed just past the right post.

But, on 62 minutes, half-time substitute James finally found the breakthrough.

The free-scoring Wales midfielder's 25th career goal looked to have done enough to earn all three points. when he took a return pass from top scorer Fer Lopez to drill home a powerful right-foot finish - his second goal coming off the bench since his mid-August return to English football from French top flight outfit Rennes.

But Pompey kept plugging away - and, despite James' introduction having made a big difference to the hosts, it was the visitors who had the final word.

While Wolves do at last climb one place to seventh in a Midlands-heavy Championship play-off zone on 18 points from 11 games, they remain behind Blues (4th), Albion (5th) and Stoke City (6th), while Mousinho's Pompey remain 13th with 15 points.

James presses claim to start

One surprise aspect of Wolves' bitty start to the campaign under Peixoto has been the Portuguese coach's apparent reluctance to give 22-year-old, 25-times capped James more of a run.

Although the Birmingham City academy product has been used regularly as a second-half substitute since he arrived, he has made only one start.

And, even allowing for Wolves' injury woes, especially up front, where Adam Armstrong was again missing and Raul Jimenez is out until at least the new year following surgery, James immediately looked the home side's dominant attacking force when he came on.

With two Saturday home games to follow, against Watford and Cardiff City, it would be a major surprise if he is not the first name on Peixoto's next team sheet, but there is a doubt over skipper Kieran Trippier, who has now missed five of Wolves' first 10 league games.

Pompey's next game is at home to Millwall on Saturday, followed by a trip to Burnley.

'We need more wins at home' - Wolves reaction

Wolves boss Cesar Peixoto told BBC Radio WM:

"It's disappointing to get only one point. We need more victories at home.

"In the first half we have to do much more. We didn't attack the spaces. But we made two substitutes for the second half.

"We were the better team all game, but we only scored one goal, we did not get a second goal and then we defended too deep in the last few minutes.

"I hope Adam Armstrong is fit for Saturday. Kieran Trippier felt something and I hope it is only a little injury. When we have injuries, we need to find solutions."

Peixoto 'told me I talk too much' - Pompey reaction

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:

"We've played four top sides in 10 days, and with the injuries we have, then it's a great point. 15 points from the first 11 games? I'd have taken that.

"If you add in the fact that we were a goal down under immense pressure, then it's a brilliant result.

"Wolves' goal was a kick in the teeth but Terry Devlin has shown us time and time again over the last few years what can happen when the ball falls to him."

[On his encounter with Wolves boss Cesar Peixoto at full-time] "We shook hands at the end of the game and, as we walked off, he kindly told me I talk too much. I very politely disagreed. The second someone has a pop back, I think it's fair game."
