Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini says three league defeats in a row this year - to Leicester, Tottenham and Liverpool - cost his side a shot at the title.

He wants a similar performance to the one that saw City beat Chelsea 3-0 on Saturday.

"I hope we can continue playing the same way we did last Saturday, being an aggressive team and trying to win from the beginning," said Pellegrini.

"If we continue playing that way it doesn't matter against who we play but we know we have a difficult game. They need all the points to try not to be relegated."

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini remains sidelined by a calf injury for Tuesday's visit of Manchester City.

Daryl Janmaat is also still unavailable because of groin and hand injuries.

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany and forward Raheem Sterling are in the squad and ready to return from injuries.

Kompany has missed six games with an ongoing calf issue, while Sterling has been out for five games with a groin problem.

Rafa Benitez reckons Manchester City's players will have "one eye on the Champions League", and says his Newcastle side can take advantage.

City host Real Madrid in the last four next Tuesday.

"In the back of your head you are thinking about a semi-final or a final and if you are going to get an injury," said the Spaniard. "They are professionals and they will try to win but in the back of their mind they won't want to miss a game through injury."

'Football manager wants to win football match' is not the most exciting headline - but that is where Manchester United are, and Louis van Gaal knows it.

With four points to make up on both Manchester City and Arsenal, there is no wriggle room for Van Gaal, even though the two clubs in his sights must still play each other.

It means - basically - United must win five league games, in addition to Saturday's win over Everton, starting with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. As United's best winning run since Sir Alex Ferguson retired is six, it is not going to be easy.

Louis van Gaal is asked if Manchester United have to win every game until the end of the season in order to secure Champions League football.

He says: "I cannot predict. We have to win our own games. But our competitors are losing also, otherwise the competition is not like this. A lot are losing but we have to look for ourselves.

On the return from injury of defender Luke Shaw, he says: "He is very positive. He is doing great, I can't deny that. He is training on the pitch with physio, then he needs to train with the football coach. That has still not happened."

Norwich City and Sunderland are charged by the FA for failing to control their players during Saturday's Premier League match.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has been facing the media ahead of Wednesday's Premier League encounter with Crystal Palace.

He said: "I always have an eye on the schedule. I have to look if the load is not an overload. I have done that all the season. I couldn't rotate because of injuries.

"We have to win. We need to win. It is much more important to win this game than it is for Arsenal or City. They have a four-point gap. It is too important a game to rotate. We have to win. We can only give pressure by winning."

Bad news for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is out of Wednesday's German Cup semi-final with a painful-sounding injury.

The German club have confirmed that Aubameyang has suffered "bone splintering" in his right toe. No recovery date has yet been set for the Gabon international.

A magnificent moment for former England batsman Jonathan Trott, who has just brought up a double century.

Warwickshire's Trott has scored an unbeaten 204 against Middlesex to help his team reach 435-9 in reply to 452.
