It could be a tough night for Newcastle and Norwich fans tonight, while Sunderland fans may be the ones celebrating.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez says "there is a lot riding on the game for us" when they face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday.

The Toffees are 12th in the table after winning only one of their last nine league matches.

"We need to react and we need to perform in the highest possible level," said the Spaniard, who is facing rumours that his job is under threat.

"It is good that we have a game around the corner but the importance of our performance is as big as you could feel we had in any other day in the season."

Newcastle and Norwich - who need a big favour from Everton - certainly hope so.

West Indian commentator Tony Cozier, "one of the finest writers and broadcasters in cricket", dies after a career spanning 58 years.

So will Sunderland get the job done against Everton at the Stadium of Light?

The bad news for Sunderland:

• They've won only one game in their past 10 Premier League matches against Everton

• Everton won this season's reverse fixture 6-2, with Arouna Kone scoring a hat-trick.

The good news for Sunderland:

• Everton have only won once in nine league games, drawing three and losing five.
• The Toffees were really bad at Leicester on Saturday. Really, really bad.

1924: Former Newcastle centre-forward Jackie Milburn was born. Milburn was the cousin of future England internationals Bobby and Jack Charlton and represented his country 13 times himself.

He was also a member of three FA Cup-winning sides, scoring twice in the 1951 final and once in 1955 and was Newcastle's record goalscorer with 200 until he was passed by Alan Shearer. Milburn died in October 1988, aged 64.

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce says his side "must take full advantage" of having "our destiny is in our own hands" when they face Everton later.

A win would ensure their survival and relegate Norwich and Newcastle.

"We need a repeat of the performance and support we had against Chelsea, particularly in the second half," he said.

"Don't come to the Stadium of Light with the expectation that it's job done because it isn't."

The 25-year-old was injured during Sunday’s match at Manchester City and specialists determined surgery was required after scans and tests revealed significant cartilage damage.

Welbeck will miss the Euro 2016 Championship in the summer and his full recovery is expected to take approximately nine months.

Swansea City head coach Francesco Guidolin signs a two-year deal to extend his tenure at Liberty Stadium.

“Francesco fully deserves the chance to continue his good work into the new campaign," says chairman Huw Jenkins. "He was prepared to come into the club at such a difficult time and put himself in a pressure situation with the club fighting for survival.

“He has achieved the goal of securing top-flight football for this club with plenty to spare and has earned the right to start afresh next season.

"It’s going to be another challenge for everyone, but we're looking forward to seeing how far he can take this squad of players over a full season."

A great performance from Great Britain's Johanna Konta sees her beat world number seven Roberta Vinci 6-0 6-4 in the second round of the Italian Open in Rome.

It could be a decisive evening at the bottom of the Premier League as Sunderland could secure their safety and relegate both Newcastle and Norwich.

A win for Sam Allardyce's side in their home game against Everton will be enough to keep the Black Cats in the top flight.

Elsewhere, Norwich will be relegated if they fail to beat Watford at home, regardless of the score from the Stadium of Light.

In tonight's other game, Liverpool take on Chelsea.

What a result this would be for Johanna Konta. The Briton is 6-0 5-3 up in her match against Roberta Vinci, the world number seven.

It is proving to be a dramatic second set with breaks of serve coming in the first four games of the set. But Konta broke Vinci again in the eighth game to move one game away from victory.

Some reaction to the news we brought you earlier this hour - the death of 20-year-old Harlequins forward Seb Adeniran-Olule, who died in a road traffic accident.

A club statement said: "Seb was one of the club’s most promising youngsters and an academy member, who has been involved with the club since the age of 13."

Conor O’Shea, Harlequins director of rugby, added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Seb’s family and friends at this difficult time.

"Seb was an incredible talent and had already represented England at under age level as well as making his senior debut for Quins at just 20. He will be sorely missed by the whole squad as well as by the wider club.”
