Kevin Ticehurst: It was never in doubt after the Scotland result. He deserves this chance after impressing with our under 21s so long. But expecting same old players, same system and no excitement. We will never win a major tournament in my lifetime though.

Jenny Hall: Well can't any worse than what we've had in the past ..Give him a chance let's see what he can do younger players will be OK with him.

Matt Watts: I admit he's a somewhat underwhelming choice. However, he seems a genuine bloke. We should wish him all the best.

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic says he will be making changes to his team in the EFL Cup at Old Trafford tonight but said he was confident the players coming in could help the Hammers reach the semi-finals.

"It would give us a lot of confidence if we could win the game and we will be doing everything to do that," added Bilic.

"If we change a few players like United will, it doesn't mean we are going there just to play a game.

"It is a quarter-final and to reach the semis is a big thing and we are just a couple of games from the final."

'Keaton has the talent'published at 16:50 GMT 30 November 2016

Earlier today, Keaton Jennings was called up to the England tour of India as replacement for Haseeb Hameed.

Ray Jennings, his father and a former South Africa international, has just been speaking to BBC Radio 5 live.

"I am very very happy and thankful to the ECB for what they have done and supported Keaton," he said.

"Keaton's mum is born in Sunderland so he has a British background. At U-19 level he felt the England setup from coaching and opportunities is the best in the world. Hopefully he will make the north-east his life.

"The media and people there have taken Keaton to their hearts. To a so-called outsider, his heart and his love to play for England is unbelievable.

"It will be a dream to see my son compete against South Africa. He is aware if he doesn't score runs he won't make the side. Hameed has done really well. England's youth coming through is in good hands. The biggest concern for a new player coming in to a side is how the mental state will be. The talent is there."

He will serve the ban with immediate effect, during tonight's EFL Cup quarter-final with West Ham.

    What are Southgate's priorities?published at 16:21 GMT 30 November 2016

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Simple and difficult at the same time - win matches at major tournaments.

England have no trouble racking up victories in qualifiers. They have won 24 and drawn eight of their past 32 but in world terms they have gone backwards because they do not win when it matters.

He must find the answer to making the England shirt weigh less when measured by pressure and break down the psychological barrier that grips talented players when the heat is on. It has eluded more experienced managers than him.

'Southgate is steeped in FA tradition'published at 16:04 GMT 30 November 2016

    Football

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

    Gareth SouthgateImage source, Getty Images

Southgate has rebuilt his managerial career since taking over as England Under-21 coach in August 2013. He endured a miserable Euros in 2015 when England's youngsters went out at the group stage but he was hampered by the FA's decision to omit players such as Raheem Sterling, Jack Wilshere and Ross Barkley.

He saw the other side as England won this summer's prestigious Toulon tournament in France - but is this enough to warrant the top job?

Southgate is steeped in FA tradition, having had an 18-month spell as its head of elite development between January 2011 and July 2012 before his return as England Under-21 boss.

He knows what the England job entails after close contact with the likes of Roy Hodgson and Sam Allardyce and has clearly developed a taste for the pressures after his time in interim charge.

'We need to be more realistic'published at 15:56 GMT 30 November 2016

    Football

    Danny Mills
Ex-England defender on Radio 5 live

As a manager you are only as good as your players. You can only improve them marginally.

When you look at the quality we have we are probably 15th best in the world. If we end up getting to a quarter-final of a World Cup that would be pretty successful.

There are some outstanding teams in the world. We need to be more realistic. The players we have to pick from aren't fantastic. Some of them aren't first choice at their clubs. They are squad players.

When I played for the national team it was a huge step up in class. Now, some players go to the national team and it is a step down in class.

Southgate was given his first managerial job at Middlesbrough in 2006, when the then 35-year-old defender quit playing to take charge of his former side.

He led the Teesside club for 151 matches between 2006 and 2009, presiding over their relegation from the Premier League before being sacked with the team fourth in the Championship.
