Italy's 3-0 loss to group leaders Spain last week saw them trail three points behind Julen Lopetegui's side in their qualifying group with three games to go.

Although the chances of them topping the group are slim, boss Gian Piero Ventura believes they have every chance of reaching Russia via the playoffs.

The Azzurri, who had not lost any qualifier since 2006, host Israel in Reggio-Emilia this evening.

Azerbaijan's 5-1 victory over winless San Marino was the first time the side had scored five goals in a game in their history.

The result equaled the record margin of victory which was last achieved when Azerbaijan beat Liechtenstein 4-0 in 1999.

Last night's action saw plenty of high-scoring games, with 32 goals across nine games.

Germany thrashed Norway to stay top of Group C and maintain their 100% record in World Cup 2018 qualifying, in perhaps the least surprising result of the night.

It turns out goalscorer Mesut Ozil likes a good sing-song after all...

Wales have sprung an early surprise before tonight's World Cup qualifier against Moldova by unveiling a new away kit.

They will wear yellow shirts with a black trim in Chisinau, seemingly inspired by the cross of St David, the patron saint of Wales.

The change of colour will come as a relief to Wales fans - the team had never won in their previous grey away shirt.

Philippe Moggio, the general secretary of the Concacaf region, covering north and central America, has been speaking to delegates at the Soccerex conference in Manchester.

Moggio has revealed talks are ongoing about hosting a joint North-South American international championship, similar to the Copa America Centenario that Chile won in 2016.

Copa America has been held every four years since 2007 and will next be hosted by Brazil in 2019. The Concacaf Gold Cup is held every two years, and always in the USA, who beat Jamaica in the most recent final in July.

Moggio said: "It is still at the early stages but there is active dialogue with Conmebol to create a combined Copa America."

'He was obviously very disappointed with what happened'published at 13:44 BST 5 September 2017

    Moldova v Wales, 19:45 BST

James Chester says his Wales team-mate Neil Taylor was "deeply affected" by his leg-breaking tackle on Seamus Coleman.

Taylor received a two-match ban for his challenge on Coleman in Dublin in March which left the Republic of Ireland captain with a double leg fracture.

The Wales defender has not spoken about the incident as he prepares to return from suspension in Moldova on Tuesday.

"Playing with him at club level I know he was deeply affected by it," Aston Villa defender Chester said.

"He was obviously very disappointed with what happened.

"Neil has moved on with his career and he seems back to normal now."

As you would expect from any elite international football team with Gareth Bale in it, the Wales squad are staying at a plush hotel.

However, it has not always been this way...

Declared an independent nation in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Moldova had only played their first fixture six months earlier in 1994 and their game against Wales was just the fifth in their brief history.

But if Wales landed in Chisinau as overwhelming favourites, their swagger soon disappeared as they were confronted by the squalor of their hotel, Cosmo's.

"We were sleeping in our wetsuits because the beds were so damp," says Wales' current manager Chris Coleman, then a 24-year-old centre-back in the Welsh side.

"The country was in a lot of trouble at the time.

"It was unbelievable. The beds were wet. It was so damp. We had cockroaches too."
