I did suggest there is a touch of luck about Mr. Venables. If he keeps going, he might get a knighthood.

    You never know...

Could you believe this is the same man? He gets the ball and says, 'this is my chance to show I am a superstar.'

The confidence to touch it over the defender's head and hammer it past the goalkeeper as if he wasn't there.

The crowd are with him. Even when he's not playing very well, if he takes a good touch you hear a murmur of applause.

  5. 'Perfection'published at 15:28 BST 6 June 2020

I'm disappointed for Scotland. I thought they were worthy of the draw.

But they couldn't have played much better - England have one of the top three goalkeepers in the world and they needed him.

The Gascoigne goal was perfection. Imagination, and a great finish.

  6. 'A bad penalty'published at 15:27 BST 6 June 2020

It's a bad penalty. He blasts it straight down the middle. Good reactions from David Seaman but it's a nice height for him.

Call the England team Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I have never seen anything like this.

They made a good change with Redknapp coming in and they had 15 minutes of movement, passing the ball and all of a sudden was asking for the ball. One cross, one goal.

Then the penalty. It is a law in football - miss the chance, and you are in trouble.

The skill that Gascoigne did was great. A really great goal.

  8. 'Gazza rejuvenated'published at 15:24 BST 6 June 2020

Euro 96 - England v Scotland: Post-match analysis from pundits

We quite rightly condemned England in the first half but what we want to know is what Terry Venables gave them to drink at half time? They looked a different team.

The fundamental reason is putting Steve McManaman on the right. That rejuvenated Paul Gascoigne, an unfit man who had been playing no part in the game became a dynamo.

Where did that energy come from?

David Kendra: You take it for granted that English crowds sing “It’s coming home” now, but it wasn’t until after this game that anyone showed any interest. If Scotland had won, you’d have never heard it again.

  10. 'We'll keep fighting'published at 15:23 BST 6 June 2020

Scotland boss Craig Brown: "It went wrong in the first 10 minutes of the second half, that was the only time we were inferior. All credit to the team for fighting back into the game and the penalty was clearly the turning point.

"Had we scored the penalty we were the more likely to go on and win the game. England got the lift instead.

"We'll keep fighting in this tournament and we play Switzerland on Tuesday with great endeavour."

  11. 'We got what we deserved'published at 15:21 BST 6 June 2020

England manager Terry Venables: "Second half we came out exactly how we wanted to after a nervous first 45. Jamie Redknapp got hold of the ball like I hoped he would do, it's just unfortunate that he keeps getting injured for England.

"Two good goals, especially Gazza's - a brilliant goal. When they got a penalty I thought it's not going to be our tournament. But we got what we deserved in the end.

    "It's a nice feeling."
