There have been suggestions Manchester City were keen to sign Sevilla's Jules Kounde, who has just joined Barcelona.

My understanding is that it wasn't the case.

Had City sold Nathan Ake they might well have been looking for a central defender and Kounde was bound to have been discussed.

But as it was, Ake remained where he was, so Kounde was never on the agenda.

Despite being the favourites after winning the league and FA Cup double that year, Chelsea lost 3-1 to league runners-up United.

Man City v Liverpool (Sat, 17:00BST)

Manchester City target Marc Cucurella has handed in a transfer request at Brighton.

Brighton have already rejected one bid from City for Cucurella and are understood to be holding out for a £50m fee for the former Barcelona player, who joined them from Getafe last summer.

Cucurella is understood to feel Brighton’s asking price is unrealistic.

Asked about the defender ahead of tomorrow’s Community Shield encounter with Liverpool at the King Power Stadium tomorrow, Guardiola said: “He is a Brighton player. I cannot say anything.”

Pressed further on his desire to sign a left-sided defender, the City boss added: “If it is possible yes.”

  11. Laporte blowpublished at 14:12 BST 29 July 2022

Man City v Liverpool (Sat, 17:00BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Aymeric Laporte's absence from Manchester City's team until September is a blow for manager Pep Guardiola.

It means Ruben Dias and John Stones will be the main centre-halves, with Nathan Ake - who Guardiola decided to keep following Oleksandr Zinchenko's exit for Arsenal - as back-up.

Stones has not been the most reliable fitness wise over the past couple of seasons and with five Premier League games to play before the end of the month, Guardiola will hope to have the England man available.

Finally, from Guardiola. On whether change in the squad is a good thing: "Sometimes, but if the three players, many important academy players we sold, if they stayed we'd be incredibly happy. We know each other, we continue to do what we have done.

"The intention in the market dictates your decisions, the wishes for the club or players. Sometimes the player wants something... for both sides, the other side, when this happens we make a replacement and they are here. Normally a project for six, seven years, you are not seven years with the same people. When I arrived just Kevin [De Bruyne] is still here. Important is the stability of the club. The guys who have left, not just Oleks, Raheem, Gabriel, all the players have made incredible contribution to get us to finals."

Guardiola on whether Erling Haaland and Kalvin Phillips will need time to settle: "Hopefully not, as soon they settle the better. In my feeling they won't take time. Stefan [Ortega] surprises us a lot in all aspects on the ball and build-up, Kalvin [Phillips] knows the Premier League perfectly. The way they settle in the few games we play, I think they will settle."

Guardiola on Raheem Sterling, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus' exits: "If you analyse what happened in the last years without these important players would be difficult to imagine. The influence on and off the pitch.

"Today in world football this situation happens. We wish them the best. The right people, I feel they settle quickly, they are accepted and down to earth, humble people. We try for Man City, we try to be competitive. Tomorrow we try for the first title, it's an honour to be here, it's a big success to be there. We know the opponent quite well, it will dictate how well our moment is after three weeks of pre-season, it's too short. I saw many good things in this period how we played, the guys we have we move forward."

Guardiola on the Euro 2022 final: "I think they deserve all the credit, football around the world, how they rise and do incredibly good. They deserve what they are getting.

"Four years ago there was not media or following like this. It happens because they do incredible things with the way, the style. I saw in England and Germany the good football, I hope they can do a good final, it's a big success for both nations. It's an incredible scenario at Wembley, a full crowd, hopefully they can enjoy it. Congratulations, it's so nice for England to arrive in a final."

"If it's possible, yes [we will sign one], if it's not we stay. Joao [Cancelo] can play there Nathan [Ake]. I never complain about the squad I have since the first season. What the club can do is the benefit for the club not me. I support the club,"
