Aston Villa continued their fine form under manager Unai Emery by holding off West Ham to move back to the brink of the Premier League's top four.

In 2023, only Manchester City (74) and Arsenal (62) have amassed as many Premier League points as Aston Villa (62).

Villa have got themselves an excellent coach, just look at his track record in Europe, with Sevilla, PSG, and Villarreal. I see good times ahead for Villa fans.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery speaking with BBC Sport: "We are facing very good players, very good teams. When they scored, we reacted very well.
"That's my demands with the players. Try to be consistent with our game plan and, with our scoring, we have to keep going. When we concede goals, we have to react quickly to recover our positioning and our game plan."
On Ollie Watkins: "Brilliant, brilliant. He's very competitive. He can add goals for the team and he did. It was fantastic."

More from West Ham's David Moyes on reaching top six level: "I see the players every day and know the levels. We need to play really well to keep it up with the top six teams.
"The players are good players but as you can see, if this is the level we need to reach, then we need to improve greatly."

West Ham manager David Moyes speaking to Sky Sports: "We weren't as resolute as we have been and we need to be harder to play against but we were up against a really good Aston Villa side.
"We didn't do well in the final third. There were opportunities to pick people out. We had a few chances in the first half but didn't pick people out. We were narrowly down at half-time and we came out hoping to get ourselves back in it then gave away a stupid penalty.
"That didn't help us but all credit to the players before they fought back and made a game of it for a while.
"There were other things in the game. I don't think Edson Alvarez should go down in the tackle but I don't think it should be a penalty either, so there we go.
"There were opportunities all game. Our balls into the box were not executed well enough. That was probably the biggest disappointment. Lots of things were actually OK. But when you're not scoring then you can't concede and need to be hard to beat. You need to be ugly at the back if you have to be. We were nice to them and helped them."

They have another Europa League game against Olympiacos on Thursday so little time to spew over today's defeat.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports: "We are feeling very good at home with our fans. We tried to add to the support and energy.
"We are trying to be positive and play in our style. We did well across the 90 minutes and imposed ourselves for most of us.
"For me to play at home is always something special. We have to believe and always connect with the fans.
"We have to be focused and strong defensively, but then create a bigger noise with the fans by making them feel they are playing with us."
On Douglas Luiz's performance: "It's credit to him, firstly. He has to be demanding in everything and he is doing. I am very happy with him.
"But I think he can do better. There were some moments after he scored the two goals where we were trying to control the game and I wasn't happy because he was too relaxed.
"We have to see where we can improve in everybody. I was very demanding off the players to try and score another goal. After the third goal we controlled the game."
On Leon Bailey's impact: "He is going to be important when he plays like he did today and score goals. Hopefully he can be in the same way.
"We know Leon Bailey has potential. My challenge to him is for him to be consistent and give us his best performances, like today. I am very happy."
On European football ambitions: "We are not contenders to be in the top four or in the top seven teams in the beginning but of course we need to take our dreams.
"One of our dreams is to be with the top seven teams and to do something in Europe. To get European football is very important and that is the work we need to try to do. We need to be consistent in what we are doing."

Only Mohamed Salah (35) and Erling Haaland (33) have contributed to more goals in this time.
Watkins already has five goals in the league this season.

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse speaking to BBC Sport: "I think it was an entertaining match for the neutral. We had a few chances in the first half in certain moments and a few individual errors. We know collectively as team we can do a lot better than that.
"Just a bad day and one that we go away now and reflect on and become hard to beat again. It's in West Ham's DNA, that ability to not be beaten easily.
"There's so many games in the season. It's important that you don't dwell on it but we will have a good look at what went wrong and make sure we show a reaction in the next game."
On climbing up the table: "This club wants to be in [the top 6] of the table, challenging. I think today is a good realisation of what it takes to be at that level.
"As long as we come away from this knowing what needs to be done to get in there, it will be a valuable day come the end of the season if we learn from it."

More from Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins to Sky Sports: "I always text Dean Smith and say I owe it to him for showing faith in me.
"I'm not just saying that because he's stood next to me! We still have a good relationship and keep in contact, don't we?"
On what's changed for him under Unai Emery: "Before I would run into the corner flags and be chasing things but now we have attacking full-backs that do that so I try to stay central. I make more clever runs, I would say.
"There were times where I was dropping too deep to get touches on the ball whereas now I'm not as bothered about that. I let the other creative players do what they need to do and receive the ball from them. I'm not too worried about touches. It's working well.
"Over 20 goals and going to the Euros is what I want to do. That's my goals and it's what I'm pushing for. I know my club form has to be good with Villa."

Aston Villa
Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins speaking to Sky Sports: "I wouldn't say it was up to me. It was a crucial time when I scored. They came out quickly and put pressure on us. The goal came at a crucial time and made the team a bit calmer, I would say.
"I like to run down the left-hand side especially. I feel like that's my game, really, when I'm one-on-one with the defender. A few stepovers! That's what I want, to be able to work my magic.
"If I was to come inside then my shot is probably going to get blocked by others supporting and I think that's what Kurt Zouma was expecting. By going on the outside, it's only him. Not a bad finish!
"It's definitely a mindset with me. The gaffer has always had faith in me here. I've always beaten myself up a little bit or get onto myself if I haven't scored.
"I missed that chance earlier in the game but I didn't let it get on top of me. I know I will get chances. Earlier in my career I probably would have kept thinking about that."

The others are Alex Ferguson with Manchester United, Jose Mourinho with Chelsea (both spells), Avram Grant and Carlo Ancelotti with Chelsea, Jurgen Klopp with Liverpool, and Manuel Pellegrini, Pep Guardiola and Roberto Mancini with Manchester City.

Aston Villa are flying and there is one man you can point the finger at: Unai Emery.
He has been brilliant since he arrived at the club. He is a winner and they are buying into what he is doing on the pitch.
They are taking that into every week and delivering on the pitch.
When you have players like Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey, you'll create chances.
Well said, Tom!
West Ham still have four wins and two draws from their first nine games.
They are only seven points off the top. Long way to go yet.

Calm down Andy. Wanting Moyes out is ludicrous given where we are and where we’ve come from. Sure, today was a pretty poor performance and result but it’s a blip, not season-defining. We’ve had a good start to the season, we’ve scored in every game in every competition. We’re in Europe for the third season in a row, which is mad! Common factor. Moyes. In Moyes we trust.

Aston Villa's Man of the Match, Douglas Luiz, speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm really happy. The fans push us and it's incredible.
"I like fishing so much. When I go to Brazil, every time we go fishing, this celebration is for my friends and my family, who I go with.
"In the last season we spoke a lot about who takes the penalties. I took responsibility of it. I'm so happy to continue to score."
Fellow goalscorer Leon Bailey: "The atmosphere here today was brilliant. It's not just for us, it's for our fans. They can enjoy coming to the stadium and seeing a victory.
"It gives us a lot of confidence. It can be special. Hopefully we can continue to work this way. We are getting results for the work.
"The team is great. Even the players who come off from the bench understand their roles. It's about showing your ability. I think I did that with my goal today so I'm very grateful for that.
"The sky is the limit for us. We have to stay focus. We need to move onto the next game. We have an important game on Thursday so we need to look at what's next."
