Not a defeat but when West Brom drew 5-5 on Ferguson's 1500th and final game. I was at that game and the atmosphere was insane!

  4. 'It's a nightmare'published at 15:20 BST 19 October 2023

Sheffield United v Manchester United (20:00 BST)

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom on the injuries affecting his team: "It’s a nightmare in terms of injuries because we're behind in terms of squad numbers. The last international break we had three injuries and now, this international break, we have three injuries putting us back.

"It's not ideal but we’ve been here before. Its an opportunity for others and we have to use that.

"What's hurting is the length of the injuries. We have players still out from last season. There's nothing we can do until January. I know the boys are okay, now a case of rehabilitation."

  5. 'He's in the right place, they're monitoring him'published at 15:14 BST 19 October 2023

Sheffield United v Manchester United (20:00 BST)

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom on the injuries to his squad: "Chris Basham, first and foremost, he's still in hospital, going crazy inside four walls. He's had a couple of operations that were needed and necessary. He's going to go home in the next few days. He's in the right place, they're monitoring him.

"The others, it was a shocking week for us in terms of injuries. Tom was ready to go and then the last kick of ball in training, he hurt his thigh."

  6. 'Man Utd game is the kind of occasion when the home crowd comes into its own'published at 15:08 BST 19 October 2023

Sheffield United v Manchester United (Sat, 20:00 BST)

    Sheffield United

    Rob Staton, BBC Radio Sheffield

I was hosting a roundtable discussion on the radio with a couple of other journalists on Tuesday and we all shared the same opinion. For some reason, we all fancy Sheffield United against Manchester United.

This could end up looking really foolish come Saturday night. However, Erik ten Hag’s team are flaky. They’ve struggled in winnable games.

The international break perhaps came at a good time for the Blades and the supporters at Bramall Lane will throw themselves into a contest of this magnitude.

Of course, the injury situation for Paul Heckingbottom is so substantial that it could derail any hope of an upset. This is the type of occasion, though, when the home crowd comes into its own. Manchester United will need to be up for this and at times this year, they’ve been left wanting.

Roared on by a vocal fanbase, in a night game, will the Sheffield United players lift themselves in a way we have seen in the recent past?

Maybe it’s just vain hope that the Blades can throw a few punches back in the Premier League to ignite a challenging start to the season.

If they can get a win against the Red Devils though, it would provide a major boost.

  7. 'Calvert-Lewin getting back to full fitness'published at 15:04 BST 19 October 2023

Liverpool v Everton (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Everton

Everton manager Sean Dyche on whether the fitness of Dominic Calvert-Lewin is key to the club's chances of moving up the table: "I don't know about crucial, but we know he is an effective player. We know he is getting back to full fitness and sharpness. I think that is very obvious from the way he is playing, his physical stats support that as well.

"It is really about getting him out on the pitch as many times as possible until he is totally free flowing because I think he is a very, very good player."

  8. 'We know where Robinson can improve'published at 15:00 BST 19 October 2023

Brighton forward Katie Robinson missed out on selection for the Lionesses this week as Sarina Wiegman's squad prepare for a double header against Belgium in the Women's Nations League.

Robinson, 21, was the youngest member of England's World Cup squad that reached the final this summer.

"I think what 'Robbo' has accomplished over the last year with the senior national team has been absolutely fantastic," said Brighton boss Melissa Phillips.

"A lot of that experience she will add and continue to [use to] grow as a player. She knows and we know the areas we want her to improve in. I think they are aligned with what England are looking for.

"She will have the opportunity to go with the U23s and hopefully put a stamp on the games.

"We’ve seen some positive performances from her. She had two assists early on and a goal in the Conti Cup. It’s just about maintaining consistency while she’s at club to put her on that next platform."

  9. 'Everton takeover talks continuing'published at 14:55 BST 19 October 2023

    Shamoon Hafez
    BBC Sport at Goodison Park

Discussions over Everton's takeover by 777 Partners are continuing, amid reports, , externalthat the deal has stalled because the firm have not been able to provide relevant financial information to regulators.

Last month, Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri agreed to sell his 94% stake in the club to the Miami-based investment company.

The New York Times are reporting that the deal is at "risk" because they have not been able to file routine financial documents but BBC Sport understands any suggestions that the deal has stalled are "wide of the mark".

The takeover continues to undergo the regulatory process from the Premier League, Football Association (FA) and Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and BBC Sport reported that the procedures usually take about 12 weeks from agreement to completion.

777 are continuing in their discussions with the FCA, providing the historical information that has been requested and the firm have not missed any deadlines around the filing of documents.

In a statement to BBC Sport, 777 said: “We have submitted all relevant documentation to the FCA in line with their requests and indicative timings.

"As we have previously stated, the regulatory processes in relation to the proposed acquisition of Everton need to be allowed the proper time and space to run their course in private.

"We will not be commenting further.”

Earlier this month, 777 co-founder Josh Wander wrote a letter to supporters saying there is "no magic wand, nor quick fixes" to solve the problems at Everton.

On Monday, British-Iranian businessman Moshiri told Sky Sports: , external"The more time that I have spent with the 777 team, the more my confidence increases that we have found the right people to take the club forward in the modern era.

"They are highly professional and deliver exactly when they say they will and I look forward to them achieving all their regulatory approvals and proceeding to completion on the timetable we set."

  10. 'Everton showing signs of getting back on track'published at 14:49 BST 19 October 2023

Liverpool v Everton (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Everton

    Mike Hughes, BBC Radio Merseyside

Merseyside derby matches in recent years haven't provided much in the way of moments to remember for Everton and their fans.

Saturday's lunchtime kick-off at Anfield once again promises to be a real challenge. As much as it was a real confidence booster for the players to go international break on the back of their most comprehensive win of the season so far, the interruption came at a cost in terms of lost momentum. But the bare facts paint a picture of a team that are just showing signs of getting back on track.

Three wins from their last four matches, including on the road victories at Brentford and Aston Villa, points to a more than decent platform to plot a pathway towards a more prosperous Premier League position. The 3-0 win against Bournemouth was impressive. Those judges that highlight just how poor the opposition was, do have some validity to their argument. But Everton played with such purpose and poise on the day that they would have beaten much better teams than the Cherries.

However, things will be very different this weekend. The new-look Liverpool that Jurgen Klopp has assembled have found their feet much more quickly than anticipated and have the ability and squad depth that makes them genuine contenders for silverware this season. The Reds' manager has found the key to re-energising the team, that have re-discovered the route to the type of high octane football, that can at times steamroller opposing teams.

Sean Dyche knows what’s at stake and much of his pre-match preparation will focus on a demand that all of players have to make things happen. They can’t wait for their team-mates to do it. They have to compete at every action point for the full 90 minutes. The levels of self-belief amongst the players will have been heightened, but they only have to look back to the Luton game to realise, they have a long, long way to go before they achieve the levels of consistency required to be successful at the Premier League level.

Merseyside derbies have a long history of providing dramatic moments and this weekend’s meeting at Anfield is very likely to be the same.

  11. Dyche on takeover talkspublished at 14:41 BST 19 October 2023

Liverpool v Everton (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Everton

Everton manager Sean Dyche has nothing further to update on the ongoing takeover talks with 777 Partners: "I've stepped into the middle of it. It's certainly not something that involves me as manager, but it distantly does from the fact that I am manager.

"I will wait and see on what the outcome is and what the timelines are. At the minute I don't know any more than that."

  12. Team news - Gueye backpublished at 14:36 BST 19 October 2023

Liverpool v Everton (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Everton

Everton manager Sean Dyche said that Idrissa Gueye had recovered from his knock.

He added: "Virtually everyone - apart from the longer term [absentees] Dele Alli and Andre Gomes [are back fit].

"Seamus [Coleman] is on the grass for the first time with us but he has only had one day, so that will take time.

"All of the [international] players have come back fit and well [from representing their countries], which we are pleased about. The other group have worked hard in the meantime."

Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell says January provided the hardest transfer window of his career.

The Toffees made no signings in the winter window, despite Anthony Gordon becoming one of the club's most expensive departures when he left to join Newcastle.

"We've got to have the ability to move quickly,"Thelwell told BBC Sounds' Nothing will be the same podcast in June 2023."Because if we don't then we'll find ourselves in a space like we were in January. That's probably the worst space to be in.

"I have to say it's my toughest window I've ever had in football for sure. I've been in this role for maybe 10, 12 years at different clubs, so a lot of windows.

"When we sold Anthony [Gordon] there was some positivity because of the money we were generating. It was a good fee for Anthony, he's a very good player.

"There was some huge feeling of difficulty for me and the head of recruitment because we knew what was left, and we knew weren't going to be able to spend the money, or if we did it was on a player who wasn't good enough.

"You can only do what you can do really, which is evaluate all the plans that you made and see if you had all your ducks in the right row.

"I'm trying to understand if I could of done it any differently, or if it happens again would you do it differently. What I'd probably do is push more aggressively for us to sell earlier, because it gives us an opportunity to spend.

"We could just put a line in the sand and say 'look if you're interested in this player, you've got 48 hours to buy him or move on' because we aren't selling after this date.

"Unfortunately because of our circumstances we weren't able to do that, because everyone can see we needed the money. I'd try and be more aggressive and clearer about where that line lies."

Everton manager Sean Dyche on the bounce following victory over Bournemouth last time out: "We were in decent spirits anyway but it reaffirms to the players and the staff that when you get it right and take your chances, and find real cutting edge in your performance, then I have always said that I think we are a decent outfit.

"I have never lost sight of that or belief in it. I still think that despite all of the recruitment challenges we have still got a very strong group of players.

"It is about performing and delivering and, of course, winning. I was pleased that all came together not just to get a very good performance but also a win."

    Everton

Everton manager Sean Dyche on facing Liverpool at Anfield: "Their record is very strong, they are a very good outfit - we know that. Our record needs changing - we know that.

"It's been a long time with not many wins but it is a tough place to go.

"We won't be listening to any of the noise around it. It is a big game. We will be focusing on our own performance, which I think generally have been strong, but we are taking on a top side."
