    Harman -10

    The OpenImage source, Getty Images

He's halfway there, but Brian Harman already has a lead that has been good enough to win the Open three out of the past four times someone's held such an advantage.

He's the fourth player to hold a five-shot lead after 36 holes of the Open since World War II - and he'll hope he's not another Bobby Clampett...

    • 2023 Brian Harman ??
    • 2010 Louis Oosthuizen = won
    • 1982 Bobby Clampett = 10th
    • 1974 Gary Player = won

Harman would also be just the third left-hander to win the Claret Jug, following Bob Charles in 1963 at Royal Lytham & St Annes & Phil Mickelson at Muirfield in 2013.

  6. Hojgaard hammers it down 18published at 20:57 BST 21 July 2023

    Hojgaard -1 (70)

Nicolai Hojgaard reduces the 596-yard 18th hole down to just a driver and six iron as he makes a par to remain one of the 23 players under par for the tournament.

The young Dane is well worth watching if you get a chance as he's a huge hitter and an exciting new talent in European golf.

  7. Canter back to even parpublished at 20:54 BST 21 July 2023

    Canter E (16)

Laurie Canter with a bogey on the 16th.

Overhitting the green from his second shot, Canter has to chip back on and he follows the chip with a two-putt for bogey.

He still sits well above the projected cut mark of three over, though.

    Harman -10 (65)

Harman earns the best round of the day

Brian Harman leads the Open by five shots after taking 132 strokes over his 36 holes so far - which just so happens to be the exact number of shots played by both Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy after 36 holes of their Open wins at Hoylake.

Royal Liverpool is now a par 71 so it's a different course, but that's still spooky, right? Harman will hope it's a sign of things to come.

  9. Siem up and down for parpublished at 20:47 BST 21 July 2023

    Siem +1 (17)

Marcel Siem with an up and down for par on the 17th.

After finding the bunker at the front of the green, he was able to get out first time of asking, but was left with a 15-foot putt.

He drains it and lets out a roar!

  10. 'There's a lot of golf to be played' - Fleetwoodpublished at 20:43 BST 21 July 2023

    Fleetwood -5 (71)

    Tommy FleetwoodImage source, Getty Images

Tommy Fleetwood was talking to Sky Sports, after finishing the second round on five under and five shots off the lead.

Describe the challenge you were facing out there today:

"It was tough, it was pretty windy and again it just feels so late coming down the stretch there.

"I think overall it is a very tough challenge of a golf course. I felt like I played so well at times, and it’s very difficult to make birdies really.

"Happy with how I played and ended up having to grind it out at the end, having to use different skills but all in all it was a good round."

On his 58-foot putt on 10th:

"I did so many good putts on the front nine and I hadn’t really holed anything, and I though it had missed it at the last minute but that was a cool one to go in and get something going."

On the great reception on 17 and local support:

"It’s great and from the get-go they’re amazing, loud, right behind me and it is an amazing feeling playing in front of them. They’ve been so great to me for two days.

"I’ve been giving them something to watch and there’s another two days to go so hopefully they’ll stick in there right until the end.

"Being so excited about playing an Open at home and to have people delivering the way they have for me, honestly it’s been so amazing."

His thoughts going onto the weekend:

"Long way to go. Brian’s playing amazing. I watched him and he was playing so well. If you’d have asked me if I wanted to be in the final group on Saturday I would have taken it. I don’t care how far I am behind.

"There’s a lot of golf to be played, and all you can do is play your own game, play each shot as it comes. Brian is clearly a long way ahead and he’s playing great golf so we’ll see what he does over the weekend but for me - keep dong the same things, stay consistent and we’ll see what we can do."

  11. Bland on course to make weekendpublished at 20:42 BST 21 July 2023

    Bland -1 (16)

Veteran Englishman Richard Bland is well on track to make the weekend.

He has been well in control after the turn, making seven consecutive pars, and he's one under par with two holes to play.

  12. Rozner birdies the 15thpublished at 20:40 BST 21 July 2023

    Rozner -1 (16)

Antoine Rozner will be pleased to get a birdie from the 15th and get back under par.

It is only his second of the day, and his first came on the opening hole of his second round.

A hard day for the Frenchman with five bogeys on the card in this round, but after a par on 16 he should be around for the weekend barring a disastrous finish.

  13. Fowler and MacIntyre make the cut but Lowry misses outpublished at 20:34 BST 21 July 2023

    Lowry +7 (77), Fowler +3 (73), MacIntyre +3 (71)

Never in doubt in Rickie Fowler's mind, in a difficult bunker position he simply gets up and down for par making it look easy - he makes the cut.

Disappointment for Shane Lowry as his back nine lets his score down. Three bogeys and a double contribute to his score of 77 leaving him seven over par.

Robert MacIntyre pars the 18th, sending the Scot into the weekend at Royal Liverpool.

  14. Fowler in troublepublished at 20:29 BST 21 July 2023

    Lowry +6, Fowler +3, MacIntyre +3 (17)

Rickie Fowler could be in trouble.

He's in the greenside bunker which Wyndham Clark has just been in. He must get up and down for par to make the projected cut.

  15. Defending champion still herepublished at 20:24 BST 21 July 2023

    Clark -1, Schauffele +2, Smith +2 (F)

What a finish that is from Cameron Smith as he taps in for eagle to make sure his title defence will go into the weekend.

Yes, he's 12 shots off leader Brian Harman but only seven behind Tommy Fleetwood in second so you never know - and just making the cut from where he was is a great achievement.

Hats off to Xander Schauffele as well who was right on the cut mark but picked up a birdie to make sure he'll come back tomorrow too.

    Ah, Adam Scott. Lovely fella.

His first act - after shaking hands with playing partners and caddies - is going over to the scorers and thanking them for their work.

The Aussie has a warm exchange with them and hands over a ball to each as a measure of his gratitude.

  17. Watch: Smyth with hole-in-one on 17published at 20:14 BST 21 July 2023

It'll either be Smith or Smyth winning the shot of the day competition.

  18. What a shot!published at 20:14 BST 21 July 2023

    Clark -2, Schauffele +3, Smith +4 (17)

Cameron Smith is in no mood to give up his title just yet - and he'll be playing at the weekend now after a sensational approach to 18.

The Australian is in full-on attack mode and crack his second from 232 yards and almost holes it for an albatross!

He's got just a couple of feet at most for an eagle.

  19. DeChambeau pushing to make the cutpublished at 20:12 BST 21 July 2023

    DeChambeau +3 (16)

Bryson DeChambeau has crept back above the projected cut line with back-to back birdies on the 14th and 15th.

However, he does drop a shot on the 16th as he misses a two-foot par putt.

Two holes remaining for the 2020 US Open champion.

  20. 'Fleetwood will be pretty happy'published at 20:11 BST 21 July 2023

    Scheffler +3, Fleetwood -5, Scott +3 (F)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup

I think when Tommy Fleetwood reflects on this tonight - the even par today, going out in the afternoon when the conditions were tough, harder than they were this morning, I know he's five behind Harman but I think overall he'll be pretty happy with that.
