As golf fans, we dread the end of The Open because it marks the start of a nine-month wait for another major championship fix. The Masters can't come quick enough.

As a major year, 2023 has been mostly memorable, although today was a little anticlimactic because of the rock-steady play of Brian Harman, it must be said.

Just to recap, here are your four major champions for 2023:

    Harman wins The Open

Brian Harman has been talking to BBC Radio 5's Iain Carter after winning the 151st Open Championship:

What have the last three days been like?

"The game was really rounding into form in the past couple of weeks. I played really well at the Scottish (Open) but had a really bad Sunday, I was disappointed. I knew that if I stuck with what I could do, this golf course could be good for me. If I executed, I could have a really good chance. That’s what I tried to focus on and I did a really good job of that."

How did you summon that state of mind?

"It’s hard when you get on that back nine on Sunday, and you’ve got a big lead to start counting holes. I said ‘no don’t do that, next shot, next shot.'

"Even coming down 18 I didn’t let myself enjoy it until I hit that bunker shot."

Did you know where you stood on the leaderboard throughout?

“I did. I knew I had a six-shot lead on 18 and I was ready to putt it down that fairway."

Very strategic throughout - was that the key plan?

“Yeah I drove it pretty good. This course was my first Open Championship in 2014 and I made a bunch of bogeys that week and I just wasn’t ready to contend in one of these major championships.

"This place is set up really good to where I could challenge the bunkers with the driver and three wood, get it up there and put it in the middle of the greens and try to make some birdies. I did a really nice job of that."

What does this mean to you?

“It’s been a long six years. I’ve played some really good golf and just haven’t got it done, so to get it done on the biggest stage - it’s what you dream about as a kid. I’ve always dreamed about holding this trophy and from my cold dead fingers, it’s going to be tough to get it out of my hands."

While Brian Harman celebrates, Rory McIlroy's drought at the major will stretch into a 10th year.

Extraordinary that the curly-haired lad who won four majors by the age of 25 has still not added more.

In the past decade, he has earned 20 finishes in the top 10 at the game's four biggest tournaments.

Impressive consistency which anyone would be envious of. But it also begs the question what is the missing ingredient to get him over the line.

"Every time I tee it up or most times I tee it up, I'm right there. I can't sit here and be too frustrated," McIlroy said in the Hoylake mixed zone after his final round.

"Again, I'm optimistic about the future, and just got to keep plugging away."

    Paul Waring

He wasn’t trying to make flags, he wasn’t trying to make birdies, he was always aiming for the centre of the greens, always on the right side, always the correct distance and he kept hitting those marks, so it just showed how well he played.

He was taking as much danger out of play.

Brian Harman, speaking to Sky Sports after the trophy presentation:

"I have thought about this my whole life and to be an Open champion is incredible.

"I doubled down on my process and I know it's boring and it is not flashy. But, until hitting that last bunker shot, I have not thought about winning the tournament."

    Harman wins The Open

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup on BBC Radio 5 Live

He’s not put himself under any pressure. A bogey was the worst score he ever had and he never looked like he would have a disaster anywhere. It’s one of these weeks, he’s been in complete control. Very happy with his swing. He knows where it’s going to go when he hits it and he putted so well.

It doesn’t matter how well you hit the ball, you have to hole the putts and he was the one who managed to get them in.

  12. 'I couldn't be happier'published at 18:47 BST 23 July 2023

    Harman wins The Open

Time to hear from the newly-crowned Champion Golfer of the Year...

"I've got to thank my wife and family back home. I sure miss them. I can't wait to get back to them tomorrow.

"First I'm going to have me a few pints from this trophy, I believe.

"This golf course was a real test. It was set up so great, even with the weather. To the superintendent and everyone who helped put it together, thank you so much - the course was excellent.

"Finally, thank you to the R&A for putting together such an incredible championship. I couldn't be happier to be its champion.

"To all the fans, all the nice words and all the people that were back home rooting me on, I appreciate it - thank you so much."

Brian Harman's shoulders were deservedly slapped from 18th green to scorer's hut.

    With one exception.

Zach Johnson - US Ryder Cup captain, previous Open champion, fellow Georgia resident - goes in for the bear hug.

"You're on the plane, son," may or may not be what Johnson is whispering in his ear.

Regardless, this victory must book Harman's flight to Rome in September.

I’m in awe of the way he kept it going.

Everybody was expecting him to stumble and when he looked like it he came bouncing back.

Great tenacity, great street fighter, gutsy, tenacious. All the descriptions that you might want and he just putted extremely well right to the last hole.

  19. 'First tee, last green and everything in between'published at 18:35 BST 23 July 2023

    Jordan -4 (70)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Just as Brian Harman prepares to lift the Claret Jug, let's hear from the home hero who captured the hearts of the Hoylake fans.

Matt Jordan was speaking to Radio 5 Live's Andy Stevenson after finishing four under and inside the top 10 on his home course.

Who has been writing your scripts this week?

“I don’t know. Normally I just see them on TV myself and think ‘that’d be cool if it happened to me.’

“This week has lived up to everything and performing like I have is just an added bonus. It’s just been that good.”

Reception on the 18th will be bigger than that for the champion:

“It was amazing, especially when there’s everyone has got brollies up. They can just shout and there’s not much clapping going on understandably but it’s still incredibly loud.

“You get to the front and everyone just starts clapping you and it is like a Mexican wave effect and it just keeps going. It goes on for about a minute or two.

“Everyone around the club, from the clubhouse, just outside here, family and friends, everyone - it has just been immense.

Overriding memories and how big will it be if he makes top 10?

“It’s just an added bonus. I didn’t think about it too much to be honest and just wanted to perform and enjoy it.

“In terms of what I remember for the week - that first tee, that last green, and everything in between.

“Everyone shouting your name on every hole. It just gives you such a lift.”
