Australia coach Lisa Alexander said:

"We are a team of 12 truly and there were a couple who didn't get on today but they were brave and courageous until the end.

"It's important to tell everyone that those players that started were our starting seven and we chose them specifically to play South Africa.

"It's a matter of matching up on what our opponents bring us. We certainly didn't take South Africa lightly.

"I'm proud of them. They're a bunch of fighters. They played smart when we needed it and that's exactly what we have to do in pressure games."

Australian player of the match Liz Watson: "It's amazing. It wasn't pretty but a win is a win. We go again and we are so excited.

"I think it came down to heart and passion. We kept getting back into it and I guess the game against New Zealand was good practice for us. We are so pumped.

"We'll go and watch the game later. Whoever we play will be a great match."

South Africa coach Norma Plummer said:

"I'm absolutely delighted for where we've taken the number one team in the world.

"In the first quarter we weren't going to the post quick enough. Once Lenize Potgieter got going I thought she was outstanding with her shooting today.

"We just didn't place the ball right in some pressure situations but it's a learning thing for them the whole time.

"We could still get a medal. Tomorrow [the bronze medal match] is my 50th test match with South Africa and then I'm handing over the reigns.

"I've done four years and shown them the way. It's up to them now."

It's hugs all round for Australia.

South Africa are in a huddle. They get down on their knees with their arms round each other. The Proteas should be so proud of themselves. I'm not crying, you're crying.
