  2. Gatland vows to rebuildpublished at 09:45 BST 15 October 2023

Regarding Warren Gatland, he insists he wants to carry on as Wales head coach after seeing them crash out of the World Cup.

His five-year contract with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), signed last December, has a post-World Cup clause.

The 60-year-old said the union would be "perfectly entitled" to end his contract after Wales were beaten 29-17 by Argentina in Marseille.

But he added: "I want to take this group on further.

"There's a clause, but I don't know exactly what the wording is. I haven't actually read it.

"I absolutely want to see this group through, but if the union want to get rid of me, then they're completely entitled to do that. That's up to them."

The WRU will hold a review into Wales' time at the World Cup - as it does after every major tournament - but has previously described Gatland as the "best coach in the world".

Back in August, then acting WRU chief executive Nigel Walker appeared to back Gatland to lead Wales all the way to the next World Cup in 2027.

Walker, now WRU director of rugby, said then: "I cannot see any circumstances where we would invoke that clause."

  3. Morgan has been incrediblepublished at 09:43 BST 15 October 2023

It's almost not down to Warren Gatland to press the reset.

He's got some retirements, some players not available, so we will be looking to those young guns.

Jac Morgan, he really needs a shout out, how incredible has he been?

When we lost Justin Tipuric, Alun Wyn Jones, Rhys Webb, huge experience out of the team, but it's given the opportunity to some of these young players to put their hands up and Morgan has taken that opportunity.

    Nicky Robinson
Former Wales and Cardiff fly-half on BBC Scrum V

I don't think you can judge on the fact we didn't get past the quarter-final.

We have to look at how well we've played, how far we've come and how good some of those youngsters are coming through.

  5. Wales to be a real threat in 2027published at 09:40 BST 15 October 2023

It's exciting, there are a lot of youngsters in this squad but it's key to have some youngsters in there to help them along.

To get this exposure in a World Cup quarter-final is massive. A lot of the youngsters will take a lot from this and I think we'll be a real threat in four years' time.

  6. End of era?published at 09:39 BST 15 October 2023

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

Just to pick up on Philippa's point, there are doubts over the Test future of the likes of Leigh Halfpenny, Gareth Anscombe, Liam Williams, Dan Lydiate, Taulupe Faletau - as well as Dan Biggar retiring.

  7. We thought we were semi-finalistspublished at 09:37 BST 15 October 2023

The frustration comes from the fact yesterday wasn't our best game.

But we won our pool, showed some dominant performances and the defence is back.

We'd gone from thinking "let's get out of our pool" to thinking we were semi-finalists, but now we've come back down to earth.

We showed good moments but not enough composure to seal the deal.

Hopefully we can still keep building despite a lot of players leaving.

  9. Williams and Biggar fit enough to playpublished at 09:36 BST 15 October 2023

    Nicky Robinson
Former Wales and Cardiff fly-half on BBC Scrum V

I thought Liam Williams played well he was probably one of our best backs.

Dan Biggar didn't played badly at all, did they look like they were carrying injuries? No, they were clearly fit enough to play.

Later on in the game when they are going off it doesn't help

  10. Biggar a pleasure to watch and play withpublished at 09:34 BST 15 October 2023

Dan Biggar has been amazing, such a good career, 15 years from first cap to now.

I had a short time playing for Wales but for him to stay so long in the Welsh set up and been the man to look on in games.

Everyone looks at the 10, it's a massive focal point, the stuff he's had to go through over the years, he's been a pleasure to watch and a pleasure to play with.

  11. 'Great servant' - Gatland on Biggarpublished at 09:31 BST 15 October 2023

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

This is what Warren Gatland said:

“He’s been a great servant for Welsh rugby. He’s been through some incredible highs and some lows as well.

"For a youngster to have come into the side and mature and develop as a player, that’s been special.

"He’s made the decision to finish international rugby. Probably for us, we won’t have Gareth Anscombe available, but we’re excited about a young kid coming through in terms of Sam Costelow."

  12. Gutted but proud of my career - Biggarpublished at 09:30 BST 15 October 2023

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

Retiring fly-half Dan Biggar tells BBC Sport Wales he is "gutted" about Wales' World Cup defeat by Argentina, but proud of his career in the red jersey.

Biggar, who turns 34 on Monday, steps away from international rugby after the tournament.

    Josh Navidi
Former Wales and British and Irish Lions back row on Scrum V

If you go back to [England flanker] Tom Curry's red card where it was a clash of heads, I think the one yesterday was worse.

I said red card but with Nick Tompkins falling it should have been a yellow.

  16. Previously that was always a cardpublished at 09:26 BST 15 October 2023

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

    Nicky Robinson
Former Wales and Cardiff fly-half on BBC Scrum V

I haven't seen an incident like that being given as nothing, all the rugby I've ever watched, when something like that happens it is at least a yellow possibly a red.

Petti made contact with his shoulder to Nick Tompkins head accident doesn't make any difference, the fact he hit him straight in the head, it's the referees duty of care to make sure that doesn't happen.

Inevitably there will be contact to the head in rugby but in that situation, it can be avoided.

That wasn't why Wales lost the game though, they should have won regardless of that.

  17. Card or not?published at 09:24 BST 15 October 2023

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

This is what Warren Gatland thought:

"It will be interesting to get some feedback on that incident because I thought it was at least a penalty, but the referee said he [Tompkins] dropped his height.

"Then we felt Dillon Lewis was on the ball before they scored. Those big moments happen and can swing things in big matches."

  18. 'Not foul play by the letter of the law'published at 09:23 BST 15 October 2023

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

    Philippa Tuttiett
Former Wales international on Scrum V

By the letter of the law, head contact doesn't automatically mean foul play.

You can see Dan Biggar shouting at the referee saying "Head! Head!" and Karl Dickson did say "it's not foul play".

It was deemed it wasn't foul play because Guido Petti was bent at the hips, with a clear wrap and Nick Tompkins was falling to the ground.

Whether I agree with it or not, because it didn't look good, by the letter of the law it's not foul play.

  20. Card or not?published at 09:21 BST 15 October 2023

Scrum V: 2023 Rugby World Cup

What do you think? Should Guido Petti have had a card for that head contact with Nick Tompkins?

Wales certainly did but replacement referee Karl Dickson did not.

    Thumbs up or down.
