Adverse weather may prolong village road closures
GooglePlanned road closures set to bring disruption to the main route through a village could last longer if weather conditions worsen, council chiefs have warned.
Work is set to start on Monday to resurface pavements in St Bees, west Cumbria, with round-the-clock closures planned for at least two weeks.
But Cumberland Council said the work along the B5345 Main Street and Egremont Road may carry on beyond that depending on weather conditions.
While the closures will be in place round the clock, access will be permitted for residents between 18:00 GMT and 06:00 and at weekends, but only where it is deemed possible.
The first phase of work is set to last just a single day and affect the stretch from Egremont Road to Nethertown Road.
It will then move to a section from Nethertown Road to Outrigg junction for four days before a planned five-day operation between Outrigg junction and Finkle Street.
Bus services face diversions via Outrigg Close during the first week and, while the final phase is being completed, will terminate at St Bees Beach before returning to Whitehaven.
The council said access would continue for emergency services, pedestrians and waste collections.
