Essex Police said its inquiries into the alleged offences continued

A man arrested after he allegedly spat at the statue of a murdered MP has been released on bail.

Essex Police said it was informed on Wednesday about a video of the alleged incident, which had been posted on TikTok.

The statue of Sir David, the former Conservative MP for Southend West, was unveiled near the Chalkwell Lifeguards base at the seafront in April 2024.

The suspect, aged in his 30s, was held on suspicion of a public order offence and criminal damage. A police spokesperson said he had been released on conditional bail until January.

"Our inquiries continue," they added.

Earlier this month, Sir David's family marked the fifth anniversary of his death.
