Engineers have completed junction improvement work at Saxmundham

Work to improve a rail junction to help move construction materials to Sizewell C has finished.

The upgrades to the Saxmundham rail junction on the east Suffolk line were carried out over nine days, to improve the railway's reliability and support future freight services to the nuclear power station.

The construction of Sizewell C on the Suffolk coast has not yet started, but preparations for the project have begun.

Network Rail said: "The complete renewal of the manually operated junction to a powered junction, and installation of modern equipment, improves operational flexibility and railway performance... across the route."

The rail junction connects the Leiston branch line to the east Suffolk line.

Network Rail said the work was an important part of a plan to support Sizewell C's transport strategy of 60% of all its materials being delivered by rail and sea.

Buses replaced trains while the works were carried out and Network Rail has thanked passengers for putting up with any disruption.
