Plans to reopen theatre overcome major hurdle

Plans to remove and replace a Surrey theatre's roof are due to be considered to help reopen the venue.

Redhill's popular Harlequin Theatre closed in 2023 after it was discovered that unsafe crumbly RAAC concrete lining the building could collapse without warning.

The site has remained closed since with delays and rising costs pushing back its scheduled reopening date.

However, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) reports a major hurdle now looks set to be overcome as Reigate and Banstead Borough Council's planning committee has been recommended to approve sorting out the roof.

The plans, if greenlit, will also install new electrics and power in the building.

An official reopening is to be confirmed – although it is hoped visitors will finally be allowed to return to the theatre in 2028.

Harlequin Theatre was built in the 1980s as part of a wider block that includes the Belfry Shopping Centre.

It will remain closed until all safety work is completed and the fit-out finished.

This later stage could further delay the theatre's reopening as the new operators will need to approve its new-look interior.

"These works will ensure that the theatre remains safe, functional and fit for operational use," say the planning papers.

"The proposed works would significantly contribute to the overall aim of improving the integrity of the building, making it safe to occupy again, leading to the eventual reopening."

Consultation letters were sent to neighbouring properties in September, receiving no objections or comments, according to the LDRS.

The next scheduled planning committee is due to take place on 28 October.
