A family has paid tribute to a cyclist who died following a collision with a pedestrian.

Steve Ames died in hospital on Thursday aged 72, two weeks after the crash on West Road in Westcliff-on-Sea at about 16:00 BST on 8 October.

In a statement, the family said he left a "lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him".

Essex Police urged anyone who might have CCTV or dashcam footage to help with inquiries.

The family said he was a man of "many interests", with his "soft spot for animals", and the "great pleasure" he took in his boat, cars and his e-bike.

"Despite living with COPD and asthma, Steve was never one to sit still. He was always out and about, making the most of every opportunity life presented to him," they said.

"He touched many lives with his warmth, humour and friendship."

The family spokesperson finished: "And finally, in Steve's memory, if you're a cyclist, please wear a cycle helmet."
