A man is in hospital after being injured in a shooting involving armed police.

Avon and Somerset Police responded to reports of a suspected firearm at an address on Fishponds Road, Bristol, after receiving a call from the public at 17:30 BST on Thursday.

"Negotiators had not yet arrived when police firearms were discharged," a force statement said.

The force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over the incident. The man was said to be conscious and breathing when he arrived at hospital and is receiving treatment for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

A cordon remains at the address in Fishponds Road but police said there is not believed to be any further risk to the public.

"A mandatory referral to the IOPC is always made when someone is seriously injured following police contact," said Supt Matt Ebbs.

"We will co-operate with the IOPC to ensure transparency over our actions and decisions.

"The role of our firearms officers is incredibly challenging, and they are rigorously trained, tested and held to the highest standards.

"They are deployed when a significant risk to the public or to officers' safety has been identified."

"This type of incident, while very rare, is distressing," added Supt Ebbs.

"We'll have an increased high-visibility police presence in the area over the coming days."
