A man has died in a fire in a five-storey block of flats in Southampton.

Firefighters used two aerial ladder platforms to tackle the blaze in the building on Anglesea Terrace after passers-by reported seeing smoke at about 06:00 BST on Thursday.

Hampshire Police said a man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was out by 09:00 and the cause was being investigated.

People were urged to avoid the area while firefighters dealt with the blaze, with road closures surrounding the block, near the Itchen Bridge and St Mary's football stadium.

Police said officers remained at the scene on Friday while enquiries continued.
