A "familiar face" of Liverpool has been remembered by his family after he fell and died while travelling on a bus.

John McGuirk, from Croxteth, spent many years working in pubs across Liverpool before running a kiosk at the city's Lime Street railway station, his family said.

The 83-year-old was the only passenger on board a bus when he fell at Liverpool One bus station at about 12:55 BST on 3 October, said Merseyside Police.

He died a week later, said a force spokesperson, who added both that the Serious Collision Investigation Unit was continuing to investigate what had happened and that a 65-year-old man was assisting officers.

In their tribute, John McGuirk's family described him as a "true character, full of life, who could talk to absolutely anyone".

"You could never keep John quiet for long, and wherever he went, he was sure to know someone," they said.

His family said he was a much-loved brother, uncle and great-uncle who had dedicated much of his life to caring for his late brother Tommy.

"We have lost John far too soon, in the most heartbreaking of circumstances," they said.

"Liverpool has lost a familiar face, and we have lost someone irreplaceable.

"John will be remembered for his warmth, his stories, his unmistakable character and the countless memories he leaves behind."
