The second phase of footway improvements around Thirsk Market Place is under way.

The month-long work will see the footway on the southern section of the Market Place, between The Three Tuns pub and Castlegate, repaved.

North Yorkshire Council said shops and businesses remained accessible for pedestrians and warning signs were in place.

Councillor Gareth Dadd said: "We just ask people to bear with us while the work is carried out. There's never a good time to undertake a project like this."

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the scheme, which is the second phase of improvement works in the town, will take place in sections, starting at The Three Tuns, between 07:30 GMT and 16:00 GMT.

The council said work would continue until 27 November, pause over the Christmas period and resume in the new year.

Dadd described the first phase of the project on the northern side of the marketplace as a "fabulous improvement" despite difficulties with underground works.

"It has been welcomed by many people, particularly those using wheelchairs and pushchairs. It's long overdue, but very welcome indeed," said Dadd.

"Of course there will be disruption as the work continues, but with up to £3m being invested in improvements around the marketplace, I think it's something to be welcomed."
