A boy has died after what police described as a "medical emergency" at school.

The Year 7 pupil died following the incident at about 13:20 BST on Monday, at Shoeburyness High School, in Essex.

Essex Police said paramedics and school staff had treated the child, but were unable to save him. His death has been treated as unexplained.

A school spokesman said specialist support had been brought in for both the children and staff.

He said first aid was immediately given to the child following the incident, and the ambulance service was called.

"Both land and air ambulance services attended, along with Essex Police, due to the severity of the issue," he said.

"Tragically, despite the best efforts of the ambulance service and school staff, the child died.

"Our thoughts are with the family at this time and along with the police, we are doing everything we can to support them during this very difficult time."

District Commander Ian Hughes, from Essex Police, said: "I would like to offer my condolences to the boy's family and we are doing everything we can to support them through this tragic and difficult time.

"Our officers remain at the school at this time to continue our inquiries."

He said the investigation was continuing and officers would work with the school on Tuesday.

He added: "We are aware of comments on social media, and we want to reassure the local community and parents of pupils at the school, no knife was involved during this tragic incident."
