A murder investigation has been launched after a woman in her 60s was found with serious injuries in a garden in Essex.

Police arrived at Whitehouse Meadows in Leigh-on-Sea at about 21:00 GMT on Tuesday.

The woman was declared dead at the property.

A 54-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. Essex Police said it was called initially after receiving a report of an assault.

The force said officers remained at the property on Wednesday.

Det Ch Insp Terry Balding, who is leading the investigation, said: "At this stage, we believe this is an isolated incident and our inquiries show that there is no wider threat to the community."
