The owners of a pub have said they are "heartbroken" after a blaze ripped through the building.

Eight engines were called to Albion Gin and Ale House in Walter Street in Jarrow on Tuesday at about 02:46 GMT.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) said the fire "spread quickly throughout the building" and crews worked "tirelessly to extinguish it".

A joint investigation between the fire service and Northumbria Police is under way.

Nobody was injured in the fire.

'We are a family'

TWFRS area manager Ian Robinson praised his team, adding: "It was a long night with the darkness meaning tackling the fire was even more difficult.

"Our priority was to ensure the fire didn't spread to the nearby homes, and also to preserve as much of the historic pub as we could."

The owners of Albion Gin and Ale House posted on Facebook that the staff were "all absolutely heartbroken".

"We are a more than just a pub, we are a family," they said.
