Archive: Margaret Thatcher opens final M25 section
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher hit back at critics of the M25 as she opened the final section of the motorway 40 years ago.
On 29 October 1986, the Conservative leader attended an opening ceremony on the road between Junction 22 at London Colney and Junction 23 at South Mimms.
Thatcher spoke out against people who criticised the overcrowding on the road rather than celebrated the engineering achievement.
She said: "They ought to be congratulating Britain on a magnificent achievement and beating the drum for Britain all over the world."
